A Bag of Grapes
As we were leaving my parents' house last night my Dad handed me a bag of grapes. To most people it would be just that- a bag of grapes- but to me it was (and always is) so much more. To understand that is to understand my father, and to understand that his way of saying "I love you," is often in the doing of things. It's in him standing at the counter for 10 minutes, sorting through the big Costco-sized container, plucking grapes from their stem, washing them, and putting only the very best into a little ziploc bag, so I can enjoy them on the drive home. It's making sure there are always fresh towels, fresh sheets, fresh everything when we come to visit. It's me reverting back to being 16-years-old whenever I'm there on the couch asking for this and that, and him humoring his totally grown daughter who is a Real Adult and wife and mother of her own now, bringing sandwiches and cold drinks and making sure my seat is as reclined back as it will go, because of course, I need to relax. It's in the way my Dad would always wash my car but not just wash it, vacuum and wax it, shine it and buff it, make it as good as new, all shine and sparkle. It's his cutting and clipping of any and all newspaper articles relevant to my life, the calls with traffic updates whenever I'm driving, the "be carefuls" and the "call when you get theres," and the coffee he will leave for Hank on the counter to find when he wakes up.
This is my Dad. He is vocal with his love but more than anything, his love is in his actions. And now as an adult I see this more than ever. Becoming a parent after being parented your entire life is a funny thing when you think about it. You have these models of what to do (or maybe what not to do), how to do it, what being a parent looks like, and then there you are, doing it yourself.
And last night as we drove and I finished off that little bag of grapes from my Dad, I thought a lot about the parent I am and the parent I want to be. I thought of Henry and Charlie, grown up one day, looking back at me as a Mama- at the things I did and the way I loved them. And oh, how I wish for them to look back at their childhood and just feel happiness. And so all of the little things in our little days, the way I cut the crust off Henry's sandwiches just the way he likes, the happy, sunshiney, good morning song for Charlie, the way we open the curtains with gusto as we get ready each day, the way I always make sure Henry's animals are back in their "home" every night- they're all part of something bigger. Little actions, big love. Teddy bears back on the special shelf, storytime tuck-ins every evening, and maybe even bags of grapes in the car one day too...I look forward to all of these things rolling into the larger story of the way my love feels to them.

Our Weekend in Numbers
Our weekend in numbers:
25: the number of minutes we waited to be greeted by a server at dinner before the show. Good thing your food is so good, Cibo!
3: the number of songs that made me tear up at The Postal Service show. So much emotion, so much nostalgia! ...and so many pregnancy hormones.
7: the number of times Henry said "THIS IS SO COOL!" while at the Children's Museum on Friday morning. He was in awe, and so so excited to explore every nook and cranny of the place.
1: the number of Big Wacs consumed. The Big Wac is a vegan version of the Big Mac at one of Hank's favorite restaurants. Awesome, right?
1: the number of meltdowns had. Sadly, this meltdown was my own. To make a long story short, we ordered our crib and it arrived a couple of weeks ago. I had asked Hank to open it up when it came to check and be sure it looked okay so we were ready to assemble it when my parents arrived this past weekend. Like even the sweetest of husbands sometimes do, I was ignored and while my Mom and I were out grocery shopping my Dad and Hank decided to put it together. We arrived home to a fully-assembled crib (yay!), but then I noticed a huge gash in the front of the wood (ugh!). I got upset, walked into the next room, promptly tripped over Henry, fell on both of us, and started crying like a toddler, right there on the floor. Henry was a-okay by the way. I pouted while Hank and my Dad disassembled the crib but eventually decided to stop acting so ridiculously. Not my proudest moment but we can laugh about it now, right? ...right? ;)
6: the number of hours we spent in the car this weekend. To Phoenix and back, then a few little trips.
4: the number of minutes we spent hiking before we realized that the trail was not fit for a stroller, even our tank of a BOB. We turned that puppy right around and hightailed it for the swings.
7: the number of ducks I was SURE were about to attack us while we were at Goldwater Lake. If you didn't know, I have a weird fear of birds and ducks. Usually it ain't no thing and I don't make a big dramatic deal about it but this time there was a HUGE swan-duck-dinosaur that kept coming at us, making the most horrible screeching sound I've ever heard. It was followed by it's little duck soldiers and I was terrified!
1: the number of delicious pizzas ordered and eaten on Friday night. We always get the same thing from our favorite place- a large cheese pizza with Bill's sauce, which is half tomato sauce and half pesto. To die for amazing.
12: the number of donuts we (over)ordered on Saturday morning. We should have stuck to the original plan of one per person, instead of a grand smorgasbord of sweetness, which resulted in stomachaches for all.
3: the number of beanies worn. Summer's almost here which means no more beanies, and I'm not sure who is sadder, Henry or me!
2: the number of frozen yogurt cups Henry ate in one sitting during our Saturday evening trip (he stole mine).
4: the number of home projects we tackled! We made a teepee for Henry, finished painting Charlie's room, put up reading shelves for Henry, and put together (then took apart) Charlie's crib.
1: the number of sandboxes that were delivered for a certain little someone!
1,987: the number of times I felt so thankful for this crazy, wonderful family of mine.
And now, photos! These are iPhone pictures but not Instagrams, so that counts for something, right?

Friday, Saturday, and Sunday too.
Hello (and goodbye) weekend! We headed down my parents' house on Friday as soon as Hank got off work, narrowly escaping rush hour traffic. We somehow managed to bypass our usual stop for pie and headed straight for burritos, with my only regret being that we didn't stop for both! It was a quick drive down though, and really, there's not too many things more awesome than Henry's excitement and anticipation at seeing his grandparents. The "Gigi! Poppy!" yells start the second we exit the freeway and don't stop until we've pulled into their driveway and are out of the car. I love it.
Best things about the past couple of days: seeing our family from NY, spending time with Nanny, frozen yogurt, running around barefoot in the grass, laughing forever with my sister, holding little Lucy and daydreaming about this summer when our little one will be here, getting the rest of Henry's Easter goodies, my baby belly finally popping (!!), and driving around with my guys listening to our current album of choice, Bob the Builder. Although this starting to make it to the list below this one after the seventh listen.
Worst things (just to keep it real): Henry's little meltdowns when things don't go his way, or he doesn't want to leave where we are, or he does want to stay where we are (getting the picture here?), seeing my Grandma not doing so well, our meal on Saturday- I think loving Mexican food so much makes me even angrier when it sucks so bad, and feeling like I had ladybugs crawling all over me for hours. Thanks Mom!
I hope your weekend had a lot more things in the "best" section, than in the worst. But the good news is that even if it didn't, there's always next time...
xoxo
