Journal Day #2

We all have songs that really mean something to us. Often just hearing it can take us right back to that place and we are able to re-experience the memory associated with the song. Sometimes good, sometimes bad, but either way music has the ability to really draw things out of us and evoke deep emotion. Choose a song that has a particular meaning to you. Tell the story of the memory associated with the song, sharing as much detail as you can. Take us there; let us experience it with you.

walking downtown

There are these times in our lives that sometimes feel much more alive than others. When we think back to them they almost shimmer in our minds; mirage-like on the edges of our memory. For me, these times usually are part of great seasons of change and growth in my life- periods of time where I was learning more about myself, stages I'd consider important in shaping me into the person I am today. And when I look back to the memories surrounding this song, they're crystal clear but beginning to get hazy around the edges as the years go by. And it's not really even just one memory- there's a million all tucked into this one song, but whenever I hear it I'm taken right back there.

I was 19, and still in that in between stage where you feel like you have one foot in your adolescence and one foot edging closer to being an adult. I was up at college, and got back in touch with some high school friends who invited me over to their house the next time I came down to the valley. One of the guy's girlfriends was named Sarah- she had gone to my high school and we knew many of the same people, but had never really connected or knew each other. It's funny to think back now at the two of us in those first days, kind of talking online, leaving little Livejournal comments, the very beginning of our friendship.

And I'm sure you know what it feels like when you meet someone and just CLICK. Male or female, there are certain people in the world that we are meant to have in our lives and when we come in contact with them, it just feels right. I have been lucky enough to have a handful of them in my world, and when I met Sarah it was this way, sitting and talking a mile a minute because there was just so much to catch up on, our whole lives really, and we were just enthralled with one another. Instant-best-friends, in the most surface way you can become close to someone instantly, but as that Fall went on that instant made way to a stronger friendship that felt more like being sisters, together all the time.

Music was a big part of our world, and we would drive around for hours just singing along to our favorite bands and songs. We'd go out to clubs at night, dancing at Hot Pink until the wee hours of the evening, Outkast's Hey-Ya and Prince remixes and old 80s pop music. We'd sit at her house, drunk off our butts and laughing until we cried, making up dances and being so silly. And there was this one song, Heaven by The Fire Theft that we would listen to constantly while driving. Funny because it's more of a love song but we would over dramatize it all the way and belt it out whenever we were in the car. When I listen to it now it takes me right back to that time- that small apartment, new friends and old friends, our crazy plans and crazier nights. We were dating two best friends and would often dissect each others' relationships to make sense of it all, so that's all wrapped in there too, along with Casey Moore's and Tempe and downtown Phoenix.

And so I guess this isn't really a story. It would be hard to tell just one that's related to this song. I knew I wanted to write about it though and once I started writing this is what I got. It's the telling of a feeling I suppose- the feeling of being young and in love with life and knowing that the world really is whatever you want it to be. It's riding around with your best friend and knowing that this is the good stuff, singing as loud as you can without any thought about tomorrow. And so to me, this song is Sarah. It's being 19 and 20 and 21. And that song is that time in my life and being an almost-adult and not really knowing who I was yet (but really believing that I did, of course). Really though more than anything it's a coming of age song to me, in the weirdest, funniest, happiest way possible.

So, that's my response. How about yours? If you'd like, leave an excerpt from your response below, along with a link to your post. I can't wait to read it.

**GIVEAWAY CLOSED**

WINNER: Ashley B. who chose this lovely Anthropologie dress. Love it, and so did Henry who chose the winning look! Congrats Ashley, I'll be emailing you soon to set up delivery of your amazing prize! Thanks to all who entered. xo

Such an awesome giveaway today, and fun too! I posted about The Hunt awhile back, and referred to my friend Kaelah, who called it a modern-day "MadRadStalkers." Anyone remember that over on Livejournal? So funny. But really, that's kind of what it is. To refresh your memory, The Hunt is all about loving things and "hunting" for them. You post something you're on the hunt for, and other users are able to chime in and help you out. It's really, really awesome and their front page is full of tons of goodies all the time.

This time around I thought it would be fun to host a "Style Me" giveaway where you will choose the outfit I will wear on a date night with Hank. It's simple- all you'll need to do is choose items for me to wear, and upload them as a "find." Each find will count as an entry, and you can enter up to three times. The app is VERY easy to use and fun too- and if you haven't tried it yet, I'm excited to see what you think of it!

And the prizes...this one is a good one. Up for grabs are FOUR giftcards to my favorite online stores- Madewell, Anthropologie, ASOS and Nordstrom. Each card will be for $50 and ONE winner will win all four, and be able to go on a little springtime shopping spree. So fun!

Here's how to enter:

Download The Hunt app to your phone.

Find the hunt I created by searching #SSHunt.

Upload finds for me to wear, and like I mentioned above each "find" is an entry. You can enter up to three times.

I'll choose a winner one week from today and post it here, so be sure to check back.

Happy Hunting...I can't wait to see what items you choose!

xo

The Hunt is an iPhone only app so users may also enter via their mobile site on any phone.
The content of this post was sponsored by The Hunt but as always, all opinions are my own.

Cookbook of the Month: March...and some changes!

Untitled
some of the recipes everyone is trying out on Instagram via #sometimessweeteats

It's crazy how fast these 2014 weeks and months are going by. I wish there were more hours in the day! This month I really enjoyed The Sprouted Kitchen, although I didn't get to make as many of the recipes I would have liked. This next month I wanted to switch it up and utilize some online bloggers/chefs/recipe sites. I haven't chosen one yet, so I am open to any and all suggestions! The only thing I ask is that the recipes are clean and healthy. I think this will be a fun way to make it more accessible to everyone. I can't decide if I want to continue along this path of a new cookbook (or site, with this change), or just scrap the initial idea and stick to trying recipes from everywhere and anywhere and still using the hashtag #sometimessweeteats. Since starting this little project a couple months back I've been cooking SO much more and loving it- it's given me the confidence to try out so many recipes I have not tried before, and for that I'm so grateful.

Soo, long story short, any blogs or sites you'd recommend? I'll figure out what I'm doing and post about it before the 1st for anyone who would like to get on board.

xoxo

The Big Kid Haircut

Untitled

I've always loved Henry's shaggy hair but more often than not I found myself sticking a beanie or hat on his head to avoid dealing with it. It was in his face constantly and I think I avoided cutting it for so long because I just didn't know what to do with it. Since he was starting school this past Monday I knew I needed to do something, because I didn't want him to have to constantly be pushing it out of his eyes. So Friday became the big day- haircut day.

He's gotten two haircuts before, one when he was much younger and another about six months ago that was a DISASTER. Not even kidding, it was the worst thing ever. If you wondered why he had been living in beanies more than ever for a few months there, there's your answer. Poor Henry literally had Lloyd Christmas bangs and it was so bad it was funny. So we spent the past few months growing it back out, and I knew once it got long again I would get over my fear and try for another haircut.

This time we went to my friend Stephanie who has a little boy of her own, and I asked for an undercut. She blended the back and sides, and left the top pretty long. As she was buzzing off Henry's locks I got kind of sad, but the second she was done I knew we had a totally un-Lloyd Christmas winner!

Untitled
Untitled

It's crazy how much older he looked the second we cut it. He's so much happier too, and has mentioned more than once how nice it is to not have hair in his face, to wake up with sweaty hair, or have knots to comb through in the morning. I don't think I'll ever let his hair get that long again unless he wants it that way, and Charlie will definitely have a short little 'do himself.

Moral of the story: yay for haircuts!

Untitled
Right after his appointment- couldn't get a smile out of him but had to get a photo of his fresh cut.

Happy writing!

Weekend Links

First of all, I can't say thank you enough to all of you who participated in this week's Journal Day. I can't wait to spend some time this weekend visiting all of your blogs and reading what you shared. Thank you for being a part of this!

This week I have a ton of links to share, but I first wanted to share a special bracelet from my long time blog pal Kathleen's Etsy shop. Azadouhi Jewelry is full of beautiful jewelry handmade by Kathleen, and I was so touched to receive a bracelet and necklace from her collection. The name of her shop, Azadouhi ("Ah-zaad oo-hee"), means free woman in Armenian- isn't that beautiful? She has SO many amazing handmade items and I think my current favorite piece (besides the two items I own) would be this gorgeous necklace. And even better, she's offering 20% off your order with code "sometimessweet20." Visit her shop here, and check out Azadouhi's Instagram too. Thank you Kathleen!

Journal Day #1

Everyone has a time in their life they view as a crossroad. Sometimes you can see it as it's happening, and you're able to choose one way or another. Other times you may not realize you're there until you look back, and see what a turning point it really was. This week, write about a time you view as a marker in your life; a distinct place where things changed, for better or worse.

H for Henry

Sometimes when I think back to this time in my life it seems fuzzy, like I'm just waking up and it's way too early, and I'm squinting and straining to read the clock across the room. It's hard to remember a lot of it, but if I commit to the memory, if I sit down and really focus and go back there, it becomes clear again. It's hard to talk about times in our life when we aren't at our best, and even harder to talk about them in a public setting like this, but for the sake of being open and honest, here goes.

I was in college when I first discovered what calories and nutrition labels meant. It's weird; until then I had been living in a state of blissful ignorance, never caring and never having to care, because all of my time was spent playing sports. But later in college, when I wasn't on the soccer field or the track day in and day out, I started to notice other girls paying attention to fat and calories and carbs and bites. So I did too.

And I could go on here about so many details. I could talk about how for awhile it was no big deal, the counting of the fat and calories and carbs and bites. And I could then talk about how over that Christmas break I was introduced to diet pills, those crazy kind of diet pills before they were ever regulated, and how I lost close to 15 pounds during those three weeks, which was a lot for an already small girl. I could talk about running for miles and miles in the morning and then working out for hours at night. I could tell you all about my favorite meal of choice- a plain can of tuna and baby carrots, or I could talk about how sometimes when a particular Dashboard album comes on I am taken right back to that elliptical machine and spending over an hour on it every single morning at 5am feeling like I was on crack. There are so many details I could go into, the restricting food and the over exercising, but as time has passed it's all kind of fused into one solid memory that's attached to a million feelings. Sadness, happiness, pain, and even nostalgia, which is weird to say. But that's part of it, for sure.

And I could also go on about a particular day when my best friend at the time took me to dinner and laid it all out. Told me what she saw in my behavior, talked about what I was doing. At the time it was so shocking to me, because I was surrounded by so many other girls doing the same thing that in a way it hadn't been a big deal at all. But Liz saw something else, and she was right. And I was lucky enough that although I had been engaging in self-destructive behavior, I was able to just stop. It sounds weird to explain it that way, but it wasn't hard to make the choice to end the bullshit. I stopped being obsessive about working out, I started eating normally, I refused to engage in the weird behaviors that some of my friends were, and my friend made me accountable. But of course, it never really goes away. And this isn't what I would even consider the turning point for all of this, although it was definitely the moment where things began to get better.

Fast forward all the way to a day in May 2010, when I was standing in front of the mirror looking at my stomach that had a baby growing inside of it. Henry. I had spent the past five years or so going through periods of feeling really good about my body, and then other times feeling quite the opposite. But I remember that afternoon- it was a half day at school so it must have been a Wednesday, and we were in that tiny house on Carleton Street. I had a cheap full length mirror propped up against our bedroom door and I was standing there just looking at that bump. I realized in that moment that I was done and so tired of not loving myself. There I was, with this baby growing inside of my body, MY BODY. My amazing fucking body, and I still had the audacity to give myself a hard time because my thighs touched. It was in that moment something in me clicked, a flip switched and my mind made itself up that I was done with the self-loathing crap. Sure, I felt good about myself a lot of the time, but those other times, when I ate a nice big dinner then guilted myself out of enjoying it later, that was not okay. And sure, I enjoyed working out a lot of the time but sometimes I made myself do it because I had eaten cheesecake in bed with Hank the night before. Not okay. So I made a promise to myself on that Wednesday afternoon. I made a promise to myself and that baby and my body that I was done with all of it. I'd come a long way since the days of over exercising and under eating but it still wasn't good enough. I still didn't love myself unconditionally, and as conversely simple and hard as it sounds, I made up my mind to just accept all of myself as I was then and as I would ever be.

That was my biggest crossroad and turning point to date, and I haven't looked back since. And sure, there are days where I feel down and out, or days where I could take a million photos and hate every one, but I won't ever let myself get back to that point, or even close. Food is delicious and exercise is fun, and that's where I'm at, and that's where I will stay. I'm 31 now and although I figured it out a few years ago, it still feels good to say it today, and say it proud:

I love me.

So, that's my response. How about yours? If you'd like, leave an excerpt from your response below, along with a link to your post. I can't wait to read it.

Weekend Wrap-Up (on a Wednesday)

Untitled

1 // Veronica hosted the cutest little Valentine's party for little ones. We had a blast, and left in a total sugar coma. This was the cake she served- SO good. It was a triple layer, fruit infused masterpiece and it made me happy that days like this don't come around too often. I eat healthy a lot of the time, but I will never (and can't ever) say no to something like this!

2 // On Friday afternoon Jana and I took the boys to Lappert's, a little custard spot that just opened in the next town over. It was a fun treat and I was actually pleasantly surprised by the grilled chicken salad I ordered. I didn't try the custard (still over-sugared from that cake!) but Henry really loved it.

3 // Sisters and babies. It's very cool to have my best friend home with her babies doing the same stuff I'm doing, at the same time. Now if only we lived in the same place. We took this photo Sunday after while at the park at my parents' house. It was 75 and sunny- best weather ever.

4 // Speaking of best friends, on Saturday I got to have brunch with two of my oldest friends to celebrate Erin's birthday. We went to Luci's Healthy Martketplace in Phoenix I was pleasantly surprised. Great, healthy food and a cute atmosphere. Plus, I had the best company. You know those people that know you- really know you- and remember all of the stages and phases you've been through? Hold onto them. These are those people for me.

5 // Lucy and Charlie at breakfast on Sunday morning. They were born just 7 months apart and I love watching them together. And can we talk about sassy little Lucy for a minute?! She kills me.

6 // Sunday dinner at my parents' house. I live for it. This plate was chock full of goodness- filet, shrimp, kale salad, and some more veggies.

I hope you had a great weekend too...although we're already halfway to the next one!

Currently.

Reading: I'm just finishing up The Spectacular Now and I'm so happy I saw the movie before I read the book. I actually enjoyed the book at the beginning, but the two versions of the main character- the novel Sutter and the film Sutter- were very different, and I really couldn't get behind the book's take on him (even though I guess that's actually the real Sutter). The movie made him so much more likable, and in turn I found myself rooting for him. They did the same thing with Amy, and I while reading it I was engaged because of the movie. It was a little strange for me because I almost always like a book much better than its film version, but this time around I would watch the movie anytime but never pick the novel up again. Next on my list: one and two.

Eating: This past week was a slow week in the world of my cookbook project, but I have four recipes to make this week and I'm excited to try them out. I've also been on a major Quest Bar kick. Have you tried them yet? Hank and I love them, and I usually eat one a day as a treat. For what it is they're super healthy, and have a whopping 20 grams of protein, a lot of fiber, and very low sugars (usually 1-2 grams depending on the type). My favorite flavors are the chocolate chip cookie dough (put it in the microwave for 8 seconds and it tastes like you're eating the real deal!), apple pie, and cookies and cream.

Thinking about: Henry was supposed to start preschool this week but because of President's Day he'll start next Monday. So I now have six more days until my baby is officially a preschooler. Crazy. Also, our pediatrician is closing her practice in a couple of months and I'm heartbroken. It's so sad when you really love a doctor (or teacher or anyone who becomes a part of your life) and then things change. I hope we can find another one we love just as much.

Listening: I've had Kacey Musgrave's album "Same Trailer Different Park" on repeat for a couple of weeks and I can't get enough. I hadn't ever heard of Kacey before the Grammys but became intrigued when I heard her live. I also can't deny the allure of those light-up boots! ha. She's awesome though, and I really enjoy both her fun, light-hearted songs and pretty voice. Great music.

Watching: Scandal. This show has been recommended to me so many times by so many people but for some reason I just never got into it. The other week Hank was at band practice until late, I had finished up any reading I wanted to do, and the boys were both asleep. I decided to treat myself to something on Netflix, and this was the first thing that popped up. I decided to finally give it a whirl and WOW. Right from the get-go I was hooked. It's really a great show- wonderful writing and that the character of Olivia Pope is amazing. I adore her! Does anyone else watch it? I'm just catching up on Season 3, I'm on episode 4. I haven't been watching too much else besides my favorite shows here and there (Nashville, etc.) and I'm still not watching The Bachelor. To be honest I'm not sure if I'll watch it again. This season was way too dumb and I just can't justify spending two hours of my life on it! From what I've heard the consensus is the same, although I do have some friends who are still loving it. Are you watching it?

Loving: all of you who take the time to read my posts, to leave comments, tweets, messages, emails, etc. I appreciate all of you so much and you make this blog such a fun place to share things that I love. I can't thank you enough for being a part of my daily life.

p.s. I'm over at Maiedae today, sharing a bit about being a Mom. Head on over to check it out!

So, how about you? What are you up to today? Feel free to do your own "currently" post on your blog and link back in the comments for everyone to check out. And thanks again to my dear friend Megan for providing the original inspiration for these posts.

Roadtripping with Nitto: Palm Springs

Road trips have always been a special part of our pre-kids life, and now that Henry and Charlie are here it's a whole new kind of adventure. So when Nitto Tire approached me about working together, I thought it was pretty perfect as taking more trips has been on our family "to-do" list since Charlie was born. Hank spent a decade touring with his various bands, so he is always excited about just getting in the car and going. And now as a family we can't get enough. Every weekend it seems like we're heading somewhere new, be it a quick hour-long drive to Sedona, or even making the trip to California. The days of just "getting up and going" are long gone though with two small children, so the key for us is PLANNING. We start packing days ahead, get together snacks, print out directions, check the tires, you name it. It's a little bit exhausting, but we think the adventure aspect of it is well worth it.

Last month we decided to take a road trip to Palm Springs. We packed the car to the brim- it's impossible to travel light with a 6-month old and a 3-year old- and off we went. Our third row was folded down to accommodate the pack-n-play, stroller, baby carrier, diapers, suitcases, snacks, food...the list goes on. And it's funny, because before I became a parent I didn't think too much about the drive. The concept of driving was simple- just get there. But now with two little ones my mind is always on safety, and that's why I love having such peace of mind with our tires. When you think about it, the tires on your car really are the foundation of your travel. They're getting you there, they're the base, they're between you and the road. And as a Mom, I need that foundation to be solid.

The drive to Palm Springs went by quickly, minus the two bathroom breaks, one lunch break and a Cabazon Dinosaur break. But we got there. And of course the bathing suits immediately came out and all four of us were splashing around in the pool before we knew it. We spent the rest of the weekend driving around, seeing the sights, and eating good food. And even though we had to break for naptimes and snacktimes and potty breaks all day long, we wouldn't have it any other way. This new kind of road trip sure is different than the kinds we used to take, but as far as adventures go, this kind is a lot more fun.

This is part one in a series of posts about road trips I'll be doing with Nitto. If you have a moment, pop over and check out the tires they put on our car- Hank and I both give them two (four?) huge thumbs up. And like I said above, I love them because I know I can really count on them to be safe. I'll be working with Nitto over the next couple of months, and next time I'll be breaking down some of the planning and checking off lists we do before a trip, and sharing photos from where we're headed next. Can't wait!

Journal Day: Prompt #1

My original plan was to post the prompt on Sometimes Sweet's Facebook, but many of you let me know you don't have a Facebook! So instead, I'll share it here every Sunday evening.

Here's this week's prompt-

Everyone has a time in their life they view as a crossroad. Sometimes you can see it as it's happening, and you're able to choose one way or another. Other times you may not realize you're there until you look back, and see what a turning point it really was. This week, write about a time you view as a marker in your life; a distinct place where things changed, for better or worse.

I'll be back Thursday with my response, and that's when I'll ask you guys to share a bit from your writing in the comments, as well as a link to your post so we can all check it out.

Happy writing- can't wait until Thursday!

Weekend Links

Untitled
The view from our driveway the other night...Arizona sunsets always amaze me.

Happy Valentine's Day! It's been a quiet, low-key day over here, which is just what this tired mama needed. Hank and I are going to try to sneak in a date night tomorrow night, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed we can make it happen. Even if we can't, this whole weekend I plan on soaking up the warm weather and sunshine as much as possible, and I hope it's warming up a little bit wherever you are too! Here are some links to enjoy as your weekend begins -

10 easy things that will make you happier, backed by science.

A great article about Philip Seymour Hoffman.

For kids: this onesie, this blouse, and these leggings.

The Grand Peptalk.

I always enjoy Diana's link lists.

11 awesome things about Valentine's Day that have nothing to do with love.

Wow- MIT told the wrong applicants they were admitted.

The boys just got these in the mail and I'm in love! So cute.

When did it bite you? For me...never! haha.

One of my most favorite places in the world.

A wonderful, new (to me) blog to love: From Adina with Love.

Currently posts around the web: Liz and Cam.

This book is next on my reading list.

The 20 most popular TED Talks.

I can't wait to watch this documentary.

On being an introvert.

Wishlist: this dress, these shoes, and these glasses.

So apparently there's a correct way to eat a hamburger, and I've been doing it all wrong!

Emma, you've done it again!

I'm Glad I Didn't Meet My Husband in College.

On finding romance in the little things...

One writer discusses Dylan Farrow and says who you believe depends on which story you recognize.

And finally, To Those for Whom V-Day Stinks.

Family Photos by Amy of Homespun Creative

The other weekend we had the opportunity to take some photos with the talented Amy of Homespun Creative (be sure to check out their Facebook too) and we had the best time. It's pretty awesome to know someone online, then connect with them in the real world in such a meaningful way. I think we could have spent the entire weekend talking and laughing, but since we only had Saturday we had to make it count. Next time, I'm demanding more time! There are just so many things to say about Amy and her photography, but I think the biggest things I took away from our session was how passionate she is about her craft, and how comfortable she made us feel. I'm also a huge fan of Homespun Creative's style and how they take more of a documentary approach to their work and show little slices of peoples' lives. I love that. We had a great time, and are looking forward to shooting with her again. I cannot recommend her enough, and if you're in the PNW area, or really anywhere- book her. You won't regret it. Amy is always traveling, so you can stay updated on Homespun's location via their Facebook page, and see when they're in a city near you! So cool.

And be sure to check out the killer deal they're offering at the bottom of this post. A little birdie also told me that there will be an AMAZING photography giveaway happening next week, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled!
